Pastor's Note:
Welcome to Providence United Methodist Church - Marion. We hope that as you explore and seek more information about our church you will find a place to call home. Providence is a friendly church that seeks to live out our faith in our community by creating strong ties to various organizations in the area, such as West Marion Elementary, Clinchville clothing closet, The McDowell county pregnancy center and others. Providence also seeks to be a church that directly responds to needs in the community as they arise.

As United Methodist’s we believe that Grace abounds. God’s grace permeates everything, it exists and works in our lives at all stages of our faith. God’s grace in our lives is what calls us to belief and repentance, it is what drives us to become the people that God has made us to be and it is the foundation and force behind our service in this world. It is the grace of God that gives us inner peace and outer love.

The word providence means God’s intervention in the world. Here at Providence we believe that God is still working, God is still intervening in the world, God is still planning for the world and for us. It is our goal to discern that plan and to follow it to the best of our abilities.

If you are lost, found, healed, hurt, sad, happy, content, confused, certain, believing, un-sure, or unbelieving there is a place for you at Providence United Methodist Church. When you visit with us you will find a welcoming community ready to walk through life with you. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you have been, we are a community of love and grace and when we gather there is a place for you. Sinners and Saints, Brothers and Sisters, you are invited and welcome to come and be a part of Providence.

About Pastor Jon:
Pastor Jon was born in Atlanta a month before his father finished seminary. After that he grew up all over the Florida United Methodist Annual Conference as a pastor’s kid. The Gaylord family (Mom, Dad and 8 kids) spent time in Clearwater, Hawthorne, Mims, St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, and DeLand. Jon graduated high school from DeLand High and from there, went on to study Religion at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL. Florida Southern is a liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. After graduating from FSC, Jon went on to Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, GA where he earned his Master of Divinity in 2013. He then ‘took a year off’ to hike the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia and to complete a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education. Jon did his CPE though The Training and Counseling Center at St. Luke, where he worked with The Friendship Center at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church which is a day program for adults living with severe mental illness, and The Outreach and Advocacy Center at Central Presbyterian in downtown Atlanta that serves the homeless population of Atlanta.

Jon recognized his call into the ordained ministry in the 10th grade while watching a rerun of ER. It was a long road from that moment to accepting that his call was in the local church. But through internships at churches in Lakeland, FL and Loganville, GA he realized his passion for local church ministry. This passion was solidified during his first appointment to Providence UMC in Lavonia, GA as a part-time student pastor. Jon has a passion for preaching, worship, and connecting what we do in the church to what we do outside of it. His hobbies include reading, hiking, fly fishing, and gardening. Jon and Keri were married January 18, 2014, have a dog named Nantahala (‘Hala’) and are excited to be serving Providence UMC and the Greater Marion Community.
